Lesson 7: "BIBLE STUDY"

Introduction: It is essential that every Christian realize that in order to live a faithful life (a life full of faith), they must consistently and regularly avail themselves of the vast reservoir of knowledge found in the New Testament (the origin of faith – Romans 10:17). It is the deed to our inheritance in heaven (Acts 20:32); our best insurance against sin (Ephesians 6:13-17; 1 John 2:14); and it is the only way that our heavenly Father will advise and admonish us (2 Timothy 3:16 -17).

Make it your daily friend and companion!!!

 I. The Proper Attitude in Approaching Bible Study.

2 Timothy 2:15 “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

A. We Must Recognize that it is God Who is Speaking.

This fact demands that we be humble, receptive, attentive, and obedient!

1)  It is a revelation!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Peter 1:3 “as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue”

2 Peter 1:19-21 “And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

2)  We can understand it!

Ephesians 3:3-4 “how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)”

B. We Must Have an Earnest Desire for the Word!

1)  Illustrations used to describe the proper desire:

•  Spiritual food and drink – 1 Corinthians 10:1-6.

•  Something to be implanted – James 1:21.

•  Incorruptible seed – 1 Peter 1:22-25.

•  Sincere milk – 1 Peter 2:1-3.

2)  It is the power of God to salvation.

Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

C. Effort is Necessary and Demanded.

We must practice the instruction of Paul to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15; in order to avoid the problem of the Hebrews:

Hebrews 5:12 “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”

Remember! We reap what we sow! Sow a little, reap a little. Sow much, reap much.

Galatians 6:7-8 “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”

D. As God Has Given Us All Things That Pertain to Life and Godliness, We Are Directed to:
•  Moral purity – Things to avoid: Galatians 5:16-21; Ephesians 5:25-31; Colossians 3:8-9; etc… Things to practice: Romans 12:9-21; Galatians 5:22-23; Colossians 3:12-17; 2 Peter 1:5-11 etc…
•  Attitudes necessary for righteousness – James 1:21-27.
•  To achieve the knowledge to come to Christ – 1 Peter 1:22-2:10 (to be set apart to Him).
•  The renewing of our minds to prove His will for us – Romans 12:1-2.
•  Be servants of righteousness – Romans 6:17-18; Colossians 3:10-17 (the “new man”).

There can be little doubt concerning the necessity of Bible study; however, it is one of the things that discourage new Christians, seemingly more than many others. This is due to the fact that many are not taught how to study! This will be the focus of Part 2 of this study.
