We have established in the first two lessons, that the authority for righteousness is found in the word of the Gospel of Jesus as the Christ only.

Romans 1:16-17“In it the righteousness of God is revealed “

Romans 3:22“The righteousness of God which is by faith in Jesus Christ”

Hebrews 7:12“Priesthood changed; thus the law had to change”

Hebrews 9:15-17“Christ’s covenant becoming affective after His death”

Hebrews 10:1-10“The first taken away in order to establish the second”

The Apostles of Jesus Christ were to execute Christ’s testament -

The Lord during His earthly ministry selected men to be His chosen disciples (disciple – learner, student, and practitioner of the teacher); see: Matthew 10:1-4; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16; Acts 1:13, 26; 9:1-19. The distinct difference between these men as disciples and Apostles is found in the definition of the term Apostle – “One Sent”. While the Lord was alive and preparing His people for coming of the Kingdom of God – Mark 1:14-15; Matthew 15:24; these chosen were His learners. Just prior to and immediately after His resurrection, He prepared them for exactly what they would be sent to do.

Just Prior to His death and resurrection:

John 14:15-18If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 15:26-27But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

John 16:13-15However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

On that faithful eve of the death of our Lord, He revealed to His chosen a battery of items that the Spirit of God would do for them when they began to go to the world (Apostleship) – from revealing all truth to literally making known the mind of Christ (confirmed by the Apostle Paul -  1 Corinthians 2:16).

Post His Resurrection and prior to the ascension:

Matthew 28:18-20And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”

Mark 16:15-16And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

Luke 24:45-49And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

46 Then He said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:4-5And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, which,” He said, you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.””

Acts 1:8But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””

Just prior to His ascension, through the various accounts we can see that He not only reminded them of the coming of the Spirit which He had already promised them (“Power from on high”“Promise of the Father”); but gave them this uniquely massive commission to preach His Gospel (for conversion and then doctrine) to the world!

They would not have to do this massive work alone; He of course was with them in their endeavors (the comfort of the Spirit), but in addition, all those who would become disciples through the preaching of Jesus as the Christ of God, would likewise join the ranks of the great charge to this day (“teach them to observe all things I have commanded you”).

The Execution of the Will of Christ was Confirmed by Miracles -

As the Apostles of our Lord and those who would become followers of Christ Jesus engaged in their work; miracles followed them acting as signs to confirm the word, and in many cases creating wonder to produce audiences to hear their words of life in Christ.

Mark 16:20And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.”

Hebrews 2:1-4Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?”

Since the oral word of God through these would create disciples before the written word would be complete, God gave gifts to the early Body of Christ to act for them in accomplishing edification, exhortation, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). There were 9 specific gifts – 1 Corinthians 12:8-11; and they would only remain until that which would be perfect would come (the written word – 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Jude 3); 1 Corinthians 13:8-12.

We today are guided by the same Spirit by which the inspired men were guided miraculously in their preaching and writing (through the means of the word of God). The Holy Spirit put these things (words) on their tongues and in their pens!

1 Corinthians 2:10-13But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

2 Peter 1:19-21And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
