THE PURITY OF THE BODY OF CHRIST – PART 1

Fellowship – What Is It?  

The English word “Fellowship” is found often in the New Testament, and is translated from these Greek words (Thayer; Vine’s):

NOUNS –

“Koinonia” Definition – “Fellowship”, association, community, communion, joint participation.

Acts 2:42 – “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

1 Corinthians 1:9God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

2 Corinthians 8:4imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.”

Galatians 2:9and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.”

Ephesians 3:9and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ

Philippians 1:5for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now

Philippians 2:1Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy”

Philippians 3:10that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death

1 John 1:3that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”

1 John 1:6-7If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

In addition, this same Greek word is used in the following passages and translated as underlined:

Romans 15:26For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem.”

1 Corinthians 10:16The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

2 Corinthians 6:14Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

2 Corinthians 13:14The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

2 Corinthians 9:13while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men

Philemon 6that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”

Hebrews 13:16But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.


“Metoche” Definition – A sharing, communion, fellowship.

2 Corinthians 6:14Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? (Uniquely, this verse has both “Koinonia” – “communion”, and “Metoche” – “fellowship)


“Koinonos” Definition – A partner, associate, comrade, companion, a partaker, or sharer.

1 Corinthians 10:20Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.”

Luke 5:10and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.””

Romans 15:27It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things.”

2 Corinthians 8:23If anyone inquires about Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker concerning you. Or if our brethren are inquired about, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.”

Philemon 17If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me.”

1 Peter 4:13but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.”


VERBS –

“Sunkoinoneo” Definition – To become a partaker together with.

Ephesians 5:11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

Philippians 4:14Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress.”

Revelation 18:4And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.”


“Koinoneo” Definition – To have fellowship.

Philippians 4:15Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only.


Summary:

The word “Fellowship” is used in scripture to define the following:

  1. * Spiritual joint participation (worship and service to God through Jesus Christ).
  2. * The extending of approval to those who have proven true by the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His doctrine.
  3. * Fellowship exists between men and God, when man adapts himself to God’s way.
  4. * The support of someone to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ is fellowship or participation in that specific work.
  5. * It is seen, then, that fellowship is joint participation or association in all aspects of a common singular goal.
