Lessons to Convert

This Month's Theme:

A Home for the Message of the Cross!

1 Corinthians 1:18-25 "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” - [
Isaiah 29:14]
20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."

The Apostle Paul is writing to Christians in this opening passage. He is describing the universal method used by God to bring the salvation of Jesus Christ to the world. Paul defines that it is Jesus Christ that is the power and wisdom of God in the salvation of men and not the men who preach it. They are simply the vessel by which God brought this message to the world (this was important to the Corinthians who had become sectarian in nature; "I am of Paul, Cephas, or Apollos" - instead of being solely of Christ; 1:10-17).

There are two very important thoughts being revealed in this passage, that we want to notice:

1. The Message of the Cross.

The "Message of the Cross"; as Paul describes it, is in fact the message preached of verse 21, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The message of the cross is not a message of capital punishment as the method by which the Lord died. It is a message of the results, and benefits of His death.

The forgiveness of sins!

Acts 13:38-39 "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; 39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses."

Reconciliation! To be made friends with again!

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 "Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."

The exceeding greatness of His power towards those who believe!

Ephesians 2:19 "Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God"

Entrance to the family of God!

Galatians 3:26-28 "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Greater promises and guidance!

Hebrews 9:15 "And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance."

These are just some of the benefits and results of the cross contained within the message. This list could actually go on without exhaustion (see - Ephesians 3:17-19)!

2. Foolishness to Those who are Perishing!

There is a conflict described within the confines of our opening text. It is not a conflict of facts, but a conflict in those who receive the message of the cross.

As the Gospel of Christ, which is the only power to salvation (Romans 1:16), goes out into the world and reveals the benefits of Christ; Paul states that the majority of hearts will not allow this message to dwell in them.

These are the self enlightened, sign seeking, philosophical students of human wisdom; who find the message of the cross foolish. It does not appeal to the way they think things should be done, or how God should approach 'them' for advice. They are the ones, who see the teaching of the doctrine of Christ as amendable, editable, or even totally ignorable.

2 John 1:9 "Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son."

These, regardless of good nature and intent, are described by Paul as perishing! This self enlightened wisdom has destruction written all over it!

Paul states without equivocation that the wisdom of God, regardless of our own sensibilities, is the wisdom that leads to the salvation of Christ. It is only through a contrite spirit that we can prepare ourselves to supply a home in our hearts for the message of the cross!

Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

An obedient heart!

1 John 5:3 "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome."

A heart that trusts and treasures the wisdom of God above all else!

1 Peter 3:15 "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear"
