“First Things First!”

For many years, I worked in retail management. It was a standard practice for our training to set goals based on priority. It was also instructed that in order to be successful, we had to prioritize things in our personal lives as well; like: God, family, work, etc… However, as most people do, we give it lip service instead of really considering how truly important it is! So, rather than truly happy and productive lives with value and meaning, we chaotically serve ourselves, then family, friends, work, possessions, pleasure, and only mention God in passing moments.

Life really is about setting priorities! No one in their right mind would argue that it is not necessary to establish well defined goals in life and work diligently towards them. What must be heavily considered; however, are the value of well-defined goals. Are they such that they make us better people, citizens, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, etc…

God; Who is our Creator, has revealed to man a set of priorities that if adhered to, can establish in each of us all the necessary characteristics of truly productive people. In this lesson, we will work towards establishing the priorities that God has revealed in His word for us, so that we may know, “First Things First!”

God Must Come First -

When our Lord came to earth and began His ministry to the children of Israel; He would acknowledge to them that their lives had become a scrambled mess. They were chaotically serving the things of this life (worrying about wealth, stature, possessions, etc…). Jesus would teach them concerning what must come first in life in order to truly appreciate anything, note:

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

These were people who considered themselves servants of God; however, it is obvious that just thinking that you are a servant of God is not enough.

Thus Jesus commanded that they seek!

This concept brings to mind the idea of following a map to a treasure. No one would seek a real treasure by randomly wandering around. On the other hand, with map in hand, we can follow it carefully and methodically towards our goal (seek).

Follow His Word –

With the knowledge that God has given us a detailed road map that we can follow to find Him and thus establish our priorities, we must simply and methodically follow it!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

I was taught a unique play on the word Bible, that it meant; Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth! Contained within its carefully written pages are instructions that can, if we allow the instruction to direct us, make us better men, women, citizens, employees, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, children, etc…

In addition, and most importantly, it can make us the kind of character which God seeks from those whom He wishes to dwell with Him, note:

2 Peter 1:8-11 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

How Do We Start?

People of the world have as many answers to this question as there are stars in the sky; however, since God gave us the map, let’s follow it!

Step One - HEAR THE WORD OF GOD FOUND IN THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.

The command of the Lord to His chosen Apostles (ones sent), was to go into the world and preach the Gospel (the road map)! This was the universal method by which God would equally reveal His message redemption to all men (Mark 16:15-16). This is the power of God to salvation and faith!

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Step Two – BELIEF THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD.

Hearing the word of God causes one to come to a knowledge that Jesus is the Son of God and that He was sent to provide for all men that means by which they can find salvation and be re-united to God (as sin causes us to be separated from Him).

John 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.””

Step Three – REPENTANCE.

This is defined by a change of mind that involves a course change in life (based on new priorities).

Acts 17:30-31 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.””

Step Four – CONFESSION OF FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS AS LORD!

Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Step Five – BAPTISM IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS!

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

LIVE FAITHFULLY, THE CHRISTIAN LIFE –

1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

This is a journey directed by the will of God and is designed to give all men the ability to establish priorities that will develop lasting value for both themselves and those they truly care for!
