Hebrews 4:12-13 "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account."

Planes, trains, ships, automobiles, and virtually all machinery require an array of fluids in order to maintain their performing ability.

Even after 100 years; cars still need oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, power steering fluid, etc…

How amazing would it be if there was just one universal fluid to fulfill what all these do?

What a market there would be for such an amazing fluid!

Yet, even if this universal fluid was concocted, it would not be a new concept! The proposal of a universal fluid that sustains life has already been brought about in the human body; blood!

Human blood is in fact a universal fluid that sustains life!

Human blood is a self starting process that begins within two weeks after fertilization. At this point, a developing embryo urgently needs a nutrient transport system. So, right on cue, blood and blood vessels begin to form. Heart tubes (the precursor to the heart) form and start pumping. The cardio vascular system is the first organ system to become functional. This is a vital factor, since every cell depends on blood to survive.

To state that “life is in the blood”, is to truly understate a significant complex order in our creation!

There are an estimated 60 trillion cells in the human body; each one carrying out an average 10 million chemical reactions per second. They are always near to blood vessels which bring oxygen and fuel.

Blood carries agents vital to our continued well being, such as glucose, antibodies, hormones, oxygen, etc… The flow of blood maintains body heat, our acid-base ratio, and intracellular water content. Our very existence is dependant on the correct concentrations, as much as the correct mix of components within our blood. Our cardiovascular system is as complex and intricate as the degree of complexity and intricacy that exists within our universe.

It should not surprise the servant of the Most High God to find symbolic connection between physical life in physical blood and spiritual life in spiritual blood! After all, the complexities of both have the exact same origin.

Matthew 26:28 “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Mark 14:24 “And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.”

Luke 22:20 “Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”

1 Corinthians 11:25 “In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

As the Lord instituted the Lord's Supper as a memorial and as Christians practiced it in the kingdom, it became a reminder and a celebration of a death that would lead to life!

Just as the blood that flows through our veins sustains us, the blood of Christ which represents the remission of sins and the new covenant sustains our spiritual life.

•  His Blood Cleanses.

Since all men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (sin being a transgression of God's will for man), there was a need for men to be cleansed of this separating disease. The cure was the blood of Christ!

Romans 3:21-26 “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

The word, “propitiation” is a big word that simply means, ‘substitute sacrifice' or ‘a provision of mercy which is not to be earned but provided for based on a unique relationship'. Under the Old Law, the high priest went into the holy of holies once a year with a basin of blood and sprinkled it on the Mercy Seat (this was the lid of the Ark of the Covenant).

Christ as our Supreme High Priest has gone into the real Holy of Holies (heaven) and placed His own blood on the Mercy Seat which He has become for those who enter into a relationship with Him, thus justifying them or cleansing them from the disease of sin (1 John 2:1-2).

•  His Blood is a Purchasing Agent.

Our lives in sin caused us to be enemies with God. In this state death was assured. We were then the servants of another whom we had chosen to be our master. The blood of Christ would buy us back from that master and make us friends with God.

Romans 5:6-11 “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

•  His Blood Sustains Our Spiritual Life.

As the Lord instituted the Lord's Supper as a memorial; it was His intent that we never forget what sustains us in our relationship with God through Him.

•  When we were baptized, we were baptized into His body – 1 Corinthians 12:12-13.
•  The Body of Christ is the church – Ephesians 1:22-23.
•  The church was purchased with His blood – Acts 20:28.
•  Additionally, His covenant was purchased with His blood and leads us to eternal life – Hebrews 9:15-22.
•  Having been cleansed of our sins through His blood, we are now His body, and the covenant purchased with His blood must transfuse through our hearts – James 1:21.

As we come up from the watery grave of baptism, our hearts begin to push through our spiritual veins, His life giving doctrine.

Romans 6:3-4 “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

Romans 6:17-18 “But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”

As children of God through Christ we are continually fed through the word nutriments which cause growth and maturity – 1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 1:2-4. These life giving nutriments and life giving instructions balance our system; maintain our health, growth, and safety.

Colossians 1:19-23 “For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.”

Truly, Life is in His Blood!
