SHARPER THAN A SWORD

SERMONS

Hebrews 4:12-13 "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account."

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE!

2 Timothy 4:7

-THE COSMIC CONFLICT-

In the some of the last words of the Apostle Paul, he acknowledged that he has been involved in a battle, note:

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Paul would additionally charge the young evangelist Timothy to continue the battle, note:

1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

The Apostle to the Gentiles would additionally teach that the warfare he was engaged in and the Christians in Corinth (as well as all who read these words to Christians), was not a carnal battle. We don't lob grenades, fire rockets, shoot rifles, or engage in hand to hand combat, note:

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”

Paul has described a conflict whereby the weapons we use are specifically used for arguments and thoughts; literally for the hearts and minds. This is a battle between the arguments and thoughts of men, versus the truth of God's word and obedience to God.

Truth vs. Error/Deception!

This can be a troubling word to many; yet, it is a word that is found in God's word over and over. It is something that we demand in our everyday lives! Truth in lending (banks), in advertising (pricing), truth in justice (courts), and even from our doctors.

Yet, when it comes to our service to God, many have abandoned the expectation of truth; however, the Bible demands it as a foundation for all that we do! The very coming of the Lord was that He should bear witness to [the truth] – Read: John 18:33-38.

While Jesus was on earth and teaching and preparing the Jews for the coming of His kingdom, He would speak of truth often. In Matthew's account of His teaching, Jesus would say: “Truly I say unto you” 14 times (5:18, 10:15; 13:17; 16:28; 17:20; 18:3, 18; 19:23; 21:21; 23:36; 24:2; 25:40; 26:21; 26:34 – the NKJV states “Assuredly, I say to you”). In the Gospel of John, Jesus would say: “Truly, truly I say unto you” 12 times (3:3, 5, 11; 5:19, 25; 6:26, 47, 53; 7:32; 8:34, 51, 58 – the NKJV states “Most assuredly, I say to you”).

God's word contains truth –

John 1:17 “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 17:17 “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Truth establishes a foundation that all who truthfully wishes to come to God must stand in!

John 8:31-32 “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “ If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth , and the truth shall make you free.

These facts establish the true “Cosmic Conflict!”

TRUTH/REALITY VS. LIES/ILLUSION

  1. Paul teaches us that if we don't develop a love for the truth, God will allow us to be deceived ; to believe a lie! 2 Thessalonians 2:10-13
  2. We, as children of God (Christians) are to put off deceit – Ephesians 4:20-24.
  3. The Hebrew writer teaches us that this is not a conflict fought just now and again, but it is a daily endeavor – Hebrews 3:13.

Exercise:

The Apostle Paul would say, “The woman being deceived, fell into transgression” 1 Timothy 2:14b . This establishes the first battle in this conflict.

Genesis 3:1-6 “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'”
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.”

Truth/Reality (God's word) –

Genesis 2:17 “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Lie/Illusion –

The cunning serpent engages with Eve and it is far less than an actual frontal attack or assault on the truth of God's word. Satan creates an illusion, and bolsters it with a lie.

Satan assaults (impugns) the character of God along with the lie:

Result - Man fell into transgression! Lawlessness! 1 John 3:4

The second battle we want to look at, would be fought between Jesus and the Jews who believed in Him (John 8:31).

John 8:37-44 I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.”
Jesus said to them, “
If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.
Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

As the Lord engages these Jews who claimed to believe that He was the Messiah (Vs. 31); we come to understand that this was just an outer illusion, as their deeds demonstrate a different truth. We can literally see the lies of the Jews in the black letters and their claims. Additionally, we can see the truth exposed by the Lord in their actions! Finally, there is the recognition of the origin source behind each of the combatants. Truth and the Lord is of God the Father, and all who deny the truth and God are of their father the devil; who, as we saw in the first battle exercise began this war!

This could easily translate to the Christian today (remember, God's word is truth!).

Lie – I'm a Christian, I have taken Jesus as my personal Savior!

Truth – He that believes and is Baptized will be saved – Mark 16:16; one must be baptized into Christ, thus putting on Christ – Galatians 3:27.

Lie – Any church is fine!

Truth – There is one body – Ephesians 4:4; Christ is the Savior of that one body – Ephesians 5:23; He is its only Head – Ephesians 1:22-23.

This is something that could go on categorically through a host of topics, some having a form of godliness, but denying its power (2 Timothy 3:5); However, unless the Christian is willing to educate themselves to the truth, and develop a love for the truth, the battle has already been won by the other side!!!

Conclusion:

Christians today, for some reason, are willing to familiarize themselves with the LIE and ILLUSION. How can this be? How can they not recognize the war and their role in fighting it?

1 Peter 1:22-25 “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 24 because
“All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away,
25 But the word of the LORD endures forever.” (Isaiah 40:6-8)
Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

Brethren! To the Christian life, nothing can be more important than the foundation of truth. We were called by it and obeyed it! We have been committed to it, as that which will keep us and free us and we cannot be founded in anything else!. Our relationship with God and His Son are maintained by it (2 John 9).

Since God's word is truth and it has been completely revealed to us ( Jude 3 ), how can we know anything else? We must once again be, “The People of the Book”!
