Football Christianity?

I am a sports fan! Not of the narcissist players, not of the out of control salaries, not of the commercialism that follows much of professional sports; just the game! We thought that maybe Football would be cancelled this year due to the strike, but it is going to happen after all.

All this to say, that in the collection of material my mother often gives me (from where she collects all of this stuff, is anyone’s guess), I found this little note, written by: Brother Brent Lewis.

“Have you heard of football Christianity?

QUARTERBACK SNEAK Church members who quietly exit following the Lord’s Supper, a quarter of the way through the service, or near the last quarter of the service.

DRAFT CHOICE Selection of the sat nearest the door.

DRAW PLAY What too many children (and a few adults) do with their attendance cards or bulletins.

HALFTIME The time between Bible class and preaching.

BENCHWARMER Those whose only participation is their attendance on Sunday morning.

FUMBLE Dropping the song book, singing the wrong verse and general inattention to the service.

BACKFIELD IN MOTION – Making two or three trips out of the auditorium during the sermon (public schools don’t allow this).

STAY IN THE POCKET What happens to a lot of money that should go toward the local work.

TWO MINUTE WARNING When the preacher begins extending the invitation, giving everyone time to shuffle song books and gather belongings.

SUDDEN DEATH The preacher going overtime.

BLITZ The stampede for the door after services.

HALFBACK OPTION When 50% of the congregation does not return Sunday evening (or Wednesday evening).”

My dear brethren, even in the humorous presentation of this note, there is a serious note concerning the real worship of God, that we the children of God, are expected to submit to Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24).

If we are interested in anything other than the pure and holy sacrifice of ourselves in reverent worship, we are as profane as any of the world who stay home and love the world.

Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Hebrews 10:23-25 “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

These practices additionally show a disdain for the knowledge of His will and a spiritual understanding of blessings and the love of God for our sake through His dear Son.

Colossians 1:9-14 “For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”

Stop playing Games, and get in the Game!

1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
