“There Was a Time”

By: Don Alexander

There was a time when we believed “Jesus Paid it all; all to Him I owe”.

There was a time when we believed that anyone who had not “obeyed the Gospel” including water baptism for “remission of sins” was still in sin and would be lost if they died in that condition.

There was a time when we believed that there was “one true church” and while we were not arrogant about it, we believed that as we adhered to the New Testament pattern for faith and practice in work and worship we were that “one true church”.

There was a time when we believed that every soul was precious and needed to know what we had learned about Jesus and salvation.

There was a time when we believed, taught, and talked about salvation.

There was a time when we believed that if worship “services” were authorized they were required, and if required then they were not optional and attendance was not only beneficial, but mandatory.

There was a time when sacrifice required more of us in money, time, and effort but reaped eternal profit.

There was a time when we valued hearing the Word of God more than cute and touching stories that may not even have a basis in sacred scripture.

There was a time when Bible study was considered essential for soul-saving power, not a platform for formation of so-called “legalism”.

There was a time when we were not so comfortable with our eternal destination anticipating the Judgment Day, rather than so confident in our eternal state that we have practically eliminated the “Judgment Day”.

There was a time when we were firmly convinced that “instrumental music” was not only unauthorized for corporate worship, but was repulsive to God.

There was a time when we sat down and opened the book together whenever we had disagreement with each other, as in Matthew 18 and Galatians 6:1.

There was a time when worship and spiritual growth mattered more than sensual entertainment; when reverence mattered more than “fan fever” for sports and other entertainment events.

There was a time when a “Thus saith the Lord” was the standard measure of truth, not what the “mainstream of the church” thought about an issue or practice.

Brethren, has the “time” come and gone? Take a cold, hard, look at yourself and ask yourself if you still endorse the items above and can find scripture for each one.

I believe that we were right to endorse each one of these and still must do so now.

What do you think, in the deep recesses of your heart?

If you are not sure, can we study and talk about it together?
