TRUE PERMANENCE

Nothing earthly and tangible is immortal by nature; so it is a true statement, that nothing we can see, or can feel, can give an accurate recognition of being immortal.

1 John 2:17 “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

This is the most likely reason that the majority seem to live for just the moment. Only able, as it were, to see what is in front of them, the immediate, the now, and never look to the horizon of post-life thought and planning.

Yet, there is something they all do in the now that resembles the idea of forward vision, the planning for that which they cannot see; they buy insurance! That's right! They purchase something for that which cannot be planned for, the unseen, the intangible.

As an adoptive father of an eight year old boy, it is vital as part of the process of adoption to create an environment of [permanence]. We as the creation of God have an essence that desires to belong to something, to be part of something. This is best described by the social practice that all of us feel towards family. This is something that our Creator has distinctly installed in everyone of us.

The Bible is full of pictures of the intangible immortal nature of all men and often describes it in the terms of permanence, by describing it in a family relationship –

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Here, the Apostle John records the words of the Lord for a relationship based on family and then uses a term that gives a description of the quality of immorality based on this relationship created in permanence.

Romans 8:16-17 “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”

The Apostle Paul illustrates the natural continuation of the permanent family relationship made possible by our Creator. Paul would go on to teach that this relationship is only a provision for those who have the foresight to plan for that, which they cannot see (insurance), note:

Romans 2:5-11 “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will render to each one according to his deeds: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness— indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.”

Paul uses in this text the second descriptive term of the quality of immortality based on this permanent relationship [eternal life]. In addition, he describes an alternative immortal existence in contrast to eternal life by the terms indignation, wrath, tribulation, and anguish (also described by Paul in his letter to the Thessalonian Christians as, “Everlasting Destruction from the presence of the Lord” 2 Thessalonians 1:9)!

Paul would describe to Christians, that everyman is faced with that which is unseen, the immortal, note:

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

As for all men, the things that are not seen are eternal! So it is not for an eternal existence we strive to plan and prepare for (since all men will know an immortal existence), but for an eternal permanent relationship described by the quality illustrations of eternal life, and everlasting life; verses eternal wrath, indignation, tribulation, and anguish.

Since these descriptions are used most to those who have had the foresight to establish a relationship with their Creator (Christians), through the righteousness He has provided (life insurance for the immortal man), Jesus Christ; it is [they], that have the most to suffer the loss of by failing to maintain this relationship until the unseen becomes the seen!

It is right now brethren, that we must put off our sight, and touch from their love of this world and “be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (establishing our relationship for immortal permanence with God our Creator) – Romans 12:2.
